Bishop Germanus of Constantinople (Istanbul) (AD 645-740)

Germanus was born in Constantinople around 645. He served as the bishop of Constantinople for 15 years, from 715 to 730. He was a committed Nicene orthodox Christian and opposed emperor Leo III when he launched his anti-icon imperial policies. In response, Leo III removed Germanus from his position as bishop and sent him into exile, where he died in 740.
