The Four Evangelists on Harbor Street in Ephesus/Selçuk (AD 400s)

Dating to the time of emperor Arcadius (395- 408), Ephesus’ colonnaded harbor street once connected the city’s great theater with the Aegean Sea. Four larger columns in the middle section of the street have pedestal bases with Christian symbols. It is believed that the top of these columns displayed statues of the four Gospel writers—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
