Bishop John of Antioch/Antakya (AD 429-441)

Bishop John of Antioch (modern Antakya) supported Nestorius against bishop Cyril of Alexandria at Ephesus’ Ecumenical Church Council in 431. Because John and the other eastern bishops were late arriving to the council, Cyril did not wait for John to arrive and led the council to quickly condemn Nestorius’ teaching, which resulted in a major division between bishop John of Antioch and bishop Cyril of Alexandria. However in March 433, John finally accepted the condemnation of Nestorius.
