The Monastery of Saint John the Theologian on the Island of Patmos (AD 1091)

The Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, today a Greek Orthodox monastery, was built by monk Christodoulos on the mountain that overlooks the island of Patmos. It was surrounded by defensive walls that makes it look like a fortress. The monastery was constructed over an Artemis temple and the ruins of the Church of Saint John of the 300s. The monastery’s museum contains several old manuscripts, including the Gospel of Mark. Tourists from around the world visit Patmos today in remembrance of its being where the book of Revelation was received by the apostle John.
