New Evangelicalism and Understanding the Church Today

From my perspective, to understand the church today (including Christianity Today’s recent positoins) we need to start with the New Evangelicalism launched by Billy Graham/Carl Henry, Christianity Today, and the three non-denominational seminaries of Fuller, Trinity, and Gordon Conwell.

The New Evangelical movement created a theological path (a third way) distinct from liberal and fundamentalist forms of Christianity.

I really encourage everyone to read George Marsden’s book “Reforming Fundamentalism: Fuller Seminary and New Evangelicalsim” to understand the themes and paths that are still playing out in church today.

When we use the word “Evangelicalism” today we are historically speaking about a Christian movement that was launched to distinct itself from Christian liberalism and Christian fundamentalism.
